“When
I was still small, I spent three years here in Vienna learning
to play the violin with Joseph Böhm, a musician from Beethoven’s
circle of acquaintances told us.
I lived in Böhm’s house and Mrs Böhm always supervised my practice.
This hospital household was often visited by an old violinist, Grünberg,
who had played for several years in Beethoven’s orchestra.
Grünberg once told of how Schuppanzigh, the concert master, complained
to Beethoven during the first rehearsal of a new composition that a certain
part for the left hand had been written so badly, that you almost could not
play it. After which Beethoven barked at him:
‘As I wrote this part
I was aware

of being inspired

by Almighty God.
6. 9. 16.
Do you think I can bear your tiny fiddle
in mind

when He speaks to me?’ ”
