“Chinese Medical Theory -
Five Notes and Five Vital Organs.”

“It is said that the people in ancient China created the five notes in the Chinese music, i.e. Kong (Do), Shang (Re), Chueh (Mi), Chi (Sol) and Yu (La), also five types of musical scales, by imitating the natural sound. The features of these musical scales are compatible with those of five natural elements. For instance, the Kong note sounds peaceful, sublime, dignified and magnificent, representing “earth” in five natural elements and influencing the spleen in five vital organs.

The Shang note sounds tranquil and elegant, standing for “metal” and influence the lung. The Chueh note sounds energetic and progressive, symbolizing “wood” and influencing the liver.

The Chi note sounds enthusiastic and cheerful, standing for “earth” and having an impact on the heart. Lastly, the Yu note sounds extensive, clear, gentle and transparent, representing “water” and influencing the kidneys.

Hence five notes and five vital organs seem to be totally different yet the common feature of “five natural elements” shared by the two systems fosters an interesting interaction between them.”
